Preparing for your startup interview

Tips on what to expect in your startup interview

Spend ten minutes pulling a few things together and the interview goes much faster. We've already read your deck and done our own research, so most of it is filling gaps and checking that what we picked up is right.

What do I need for the interview?

These are five things you won't be able to complete the interview without:

  • Your monthly burn

  • Your runway

  • Your target raise

  • Your pre-money valuation

  • How much is already committed.

What do you ask me in the interview?

Roughly in the order we'll ask:

Your numbers, the current ones

Revenue for the last 12 months and the next 12, your burn and runway, and any unit economics you track. All in pounds, we don't convert currencies. Pre-revenue is a real answer, so just say so.

Your round

Target raise, valuation and how you arrived at it, what's already committed, your target close month, and your SEIS or EIS status

Your team

Each founder's role, the equity split, whether they're full time, and their LinkedIn. We also ask about diversity, and it's worth answering, because some investors are specifically looking for it

Your company and product

When you started trading, what stage the product is at, how you make money, and any IP

Your market

Market size and how you worked it out, who you sell to, and your named competitors

How you see an exit

Trade sale, IPO, something else, and roughly when. This one catches people out

Worth doing first: check your deck is current

We read it against Companies House and public sources, and anything that disagrees comes up in the interview with both numbers named. An out-of-date figure reads as a contradiction rather than an old slide.
